In our new Thursday feature, we’ll explore the best way to set up your rental, one room at a time. Today, we’ll start with the most important space, the bedroom. If there is one thing that every single renter has in common, it is that they need a comfortable place to rest their head at night. So the bedroom is the perfect place to begin your focus on how to improve or set up your rental.
If you just have one bedroom or studio space, it is easy to determine the master bedroom. If you have more than one, choose the biggest OR the one that has a bathroom attached, if that is an option.
The master bedroom should have one big bed (as opposed to two smaller beds) and the bed should be as big as possible while still accommodating the space. Can you fit at least a queen? Then go for it!
I am a BIG believer in keeping things simple, even in the master bedroom. I love the example above because it is so easy to duplicate. A simple color palette of blues and white gives this room a look of cohesion without being fussy.
The sheets on every bed in your space should be white. NO exceptions. There is absolutely nothing more luxurious than a beautifully made bed with crisp white sheets. People make the mistake of thinking white should be avoided for various reasons, but the truth is they look the best AND they are the easiest to care for because you can bleach them clean. Your bedspread or duvet should also be white. Keep it simple. Add a throw at the foot of the bed in the color scheme of your room, and you’re done. Hotels almost exclusively use white sheets – there is a reason for that!
I love these West Elm linen sheets and duvet, but whatever you choose, do make sure that they are high quality. This is not the place to skimp. You should also have at least one spare set of sheets per bed in your home (we’ll be covering the linen closet in a future post for more on that.)
A few of my fave sheet sets:
There should absolutely be at least one nightstand, depending on the size of your space, with a lamp. I also recommend some kind of charging station in the room, like an alarm clock with charger attached (please choose a pretty one, like this)
Here is a beautiful example of symmetry and simple but effective nightstand styling. Just remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated!
What are your master bedroom must haves? What amenities do you appreciate when you travel for the bedroom?
