Today we’re talking all about the living room. I feel like this room is so standard that it almost gets neglected – taken for granted, if you will. I mean, have you ever been in a house that didn’t have a living room?? No, of course not. But really, the living room is SO important. It is a space for people to come together, either to socialize, to make plans, or just to relax. We talked yesterday about a great way to make a statement and the living room is a great place to do this.
There are some other elements in a short term rental that you need to provide in order to give your guests the best experience possible. We’ll review these things in detail below!
There is an expectation these days that a home will have a television (unless you are taking an “off the grid” marketing angle – but that’s a story for another day). These days, you really don’t need to provide cable BUT you need easy access to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. My recommendation is to set up accounts for specifically for your guests (this can be done by creating a “guest” profile in each of the apps). The monthly fees for these streaming services are so low, and you will absolutely get a return with happy guests.
Along with these apps, another great amenity is providing a bluetooth stereo for music. One option is the Amazon Alexa system. Very user friendly, and a fun perk for those guests who don’t have an Alexa system in their own home. Sonos also offers a great bluetooth system, but this is a bit bigger investment.
Don’t forget to include very clear instructions on how to use any of the technology/entertainment in your home!
Sofa and Chairs:
An entertainment center is nothing without a comfortable place to sit. If you are tight on space, a couple ottomans are helpful in maximizing seating options. Or, an ottoman style coffee table that can double as seating is a great choice too.
Many people think they should veer away from leather, or white upholstery, for high traffic areas. However, I am of the belief that these are both perfect options as they are super easy to clean. Along with looking fresh and modern, you can bleach white upholstery to get it looking brand new again. Leather will age into a beautiful patina, and a little leather polish goes a long way.
In order to really make your space feel finished (especially in photographs!) you really need a rug. There are many resources online for figuring out the right size rug for your layout. Do not underestimate the power of a properly placed and sized rug! I like this website for its handy illustrations for each room.
